A Critique of Global Warming: An Education to Action

The Article entitled “Global Warming: An Education to Action” by Marionito L. Hinacay presented some sort of discussions about the issues on global warming. The article aims to open the mind of individual especially the new generation to a broader perspective, deeper understanding and wholehearted support of the most dreadful issue of the time. It tackles such discussions with significant attention on whether global warming is a factual or debatable issue; a political issue or an educational issue; and a moral or engineering issue. This article has the connection to the documentary film entitled “An Inconvenient Truth” by Al Gore. The preceding discussions on the global warming sounds like a protagonist point of view. It serves as a way on calling individuals to be attentive and to have active participation in saving our mother earth. The author of the article also addresses all levels in the society to have participation especially those people in academe to join the advocacy of “education to action”. The author also believes that in school, the teachers have the capacity to inculcate in the mind of their students about the issue on global warming.
First thing I wanted to argue with is the title and the connection with its contents in the article. The title "Global Warming: An Education to Action", the line "an education to action" here gives me a perception of making our knowledge gained through education to put it in action. The actions that I meant here are the ways of controlling the condition of global warming, preventions, and precautionary measures regarding the fast approaching effects of global change in climactic conditions. However, my perceptions does not coincide with the contents of the article. In the article, it shows here that global warming issues was not yet integrated in education and it's still on its way to be a part in education teachings. It seems that no such actions as I thought were being discussed in the article. It's somewhat like convincing people that global warming is occurring. It's purpose here is to call support and understanding from the people especially the new generation. Where is the actions of preventing the global warming to become bigger if we are still on the process of understanding what global warming is all about?
Second thing I wanted to give comment is the idea of equipping teachers to get involved in the issue of global warming. I agree to that idea. Teachers, as the molders of the youths' perspectives must be involved in the issue not only those who belong in the field of natural sciences. As the higher Education Institutions continue to propagate teachers, it is good that each teacher know about global warming. Teachers are the best catalysts of bringing to the students the awareness of their environment.
Last thing I wanted to criticize is the idea of having only discussions of global warming in school and community. What's the next step if we know about it? Let's take this scenario, a student knows about global warming and he shared his knowledge to other people.Knowing global warming is not enough in saving our mother earth. This student may have this so-called action by sharing to others but for me, it is not the essence of "education to action". Does knowledge on global warming decrease the amount of greenhouse gases that results to global warming? Scientifically, it is not. So what are the necessary actions to do? If I will be asked, I will just plant trees. The author of the article just simply say that planting trees is just a "little thing" man can do but actually it's not if each person in the world will plant trees. Could this problem on global warming could not be solved? Also, there are so many things or actions that we can do in order to solve this enigma on earth.
All of these arguments presented are just the few things I would like to clarify.These few things are some of my observations in the present situation. It was a great privilege for me to read this kind of article. I would be interested to read more articles about global warming which were too broad or too narrow.
